The Chickamaugans (also known as Chickamaugas) who lived on the landward side of the Appalachian continental divide were denounced as traitors by the Cherokee majority who lived on the Atlantic seaboard when they signed treaties in 1806 and 1817. The majority on the seaboard were surrounded by whites and took up farming (wheat and other products) much earlier. The Chickamaugans in Tennessee were more dependent on corn and hunting. I explain a lot on my blog at https://carla-toney.com/2025/10/06/dragging-canoe-was-right/. And the univerities of Vienna, Bonn, Mainz, and Osnabrück published my book Multitribal Indians in Search of No Man's Land: The American Expansion and the Chickamaugans Between Resistance and Migration (503 pages, published in 2023). You can contact me through my blog: carla-toney.com. Good luck Carla

In reply to <a href="https://hilltopmonitor.jewell.edu/a-conversation-about-the-chickamauga-cherokee-people/#comment-92364">Tanisha Richerson</a>.

Dear Tanisha, Perhaps my book, Multitribal Indians in Search of No Man's Land: The American Expansion and the Chickamaugans Between Resistance and Migration, will help to explain why it is so hard to find your roots. I had the same problem. The book is expensive because it was published in 2023 by the universities of Vienna, Bonn, Mainz, and Osnabrück, but I am now blogging. I have just started but I published an article on my blog, "Dragging Canoe was right." He was the first major leader of the Chickamaugans (also known as Chickamaugas - but Wilma Mankiller, former Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, called them Chickamaugans). Anyway you can find my blog and contact me directly at carla-toney.com or have a look at the history which I published on my blog at: https://carla-toney.com/2025/10/06/dragging-canoe-was-right/ Good luck, Carla
