“Fallout 4” is game of the year. While visually “Fallout 4” doesn’t have much more to offer than “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” or “Fallout…

“Fallout 4” is game of the year. While visually “Fallout 4” doesn’t have much more to offer than “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” or “Fallout 3,” the add-ons make it a much more complete game than either of the other major Bethesda Softworks hits. “Fallout 4” gives players a completely immersive experience where it is possible to put in thousands of hours over the course of multiple playthroughs, each time tapping into a new facet of the game.

Through the course of the game there are many factions that the player can choose to join including the Brotherhood of Steel, The Institute, Railroad and the Minutemen. The faction you choose to join influences the outcome of the story line, along with certain bonuses or items that you could earn with one faction as opposed to another. Although the idea of choosing a faction is something that remains constant from “Fallout 3,” the new factions offer a refreshing twist on the story of Fallout as a whole.

The point of the main storyline of the new game is to retrieve your son, who was stolen by the Institute from vault 111 in Boston after the nuclear annihilation of the surface. Some may think that the games are too similar since “Fallout 3” is based on finding your father.

While this is marginally true, “Fallout 4” is definitely different than its predecessor. One major area on the map that is incredibly unique is Diamond City, which is crucial to the story and is located inside of Fenway Park. Its contains a home that the player can purchase in game called “Home Base.” If that isn’t cool, I don’t know what is.

Major changes made include things like structure building at settlements the player controls, with a new perk allowing for trade between multiple settlements; extreme weapon customization, power armor customization; armor customization, and my personal favorite, modification (mod) support for consoles like PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One.

Mod support on consoles is a huge step forward for Bethesda Softworks and the video game world in general. Typically mods are only allowed and supported on personal computers (PCs). While “Fallout 4” is already an extremely well-made game, mods make any game better. With the option of things as menial as the Buzz Lightyear power armor mods or more useful mods like inventory search mods, the game gains something that not even “Fallout 3” had: infinite replay-ability.

Although previous Bethesda games like “Skyrim” and “Fallout 3” had a huge amount of replay-ability, Fallout 4 pushes that amount of replay-ability to infinity (and beyond with the Buzz Lightyear mod).

In short, “Fallout 4” is every gamer college student’s worst nightmare. Not only does it take a lot of time to achieve a high level in the game and complete it, but every playthrough of the game you can add on more mods to use, find items you had not in a previous playthrough and attempt to find all of the Vault Boy bobble heads spread everywhere throughout the Wasteland.

“Fallout 4” is the perfect game for “no life,” and I know that it is probably the only video game that I will enjoy playing for many years to come.

“Spectre” reminds the audience of the ghosts of past James Bond movies but refreshes the experience with a great deal of action and excitement.

The movie begins in Mexico, with Bond, played by Daniel Craig, working his way from Central America to Europe and eventually to North Africa and the Middle East in pursuit of a dangerous group of criminals. From a beautiful scene filled with the Day of the Dead celebrations to fighting on a helicopter to fight scenes on snowy mountains and in railcars, “Spectre” is filled with allusions to Bond movies from the past.

Photo courtesy of James Bond 007 Magazine

“Spectre” provides audiences with a plethora of fine movie making. The camera work, especially in the opening Day of the Dead scene, is impeccable. As far as the plot goes, “Spectre” uses current issues like mass data gathering and almost shows the audience the dangers of a future where the government can see and hear everything.

Though the characters did not make much progress, they were far more interesting than those in previous Bond films. As Craig’s potentially last Bond film, “Spectre” not only tied together the stories of his previous endeavors but also provided the audience with an action-packed-thrill-ride of a sendoff. Almost every action scene in the film was a nod to those of previous films, for example the ejection seat from “Goldeneye.” As a Bond fan from the beginning of my life and having seen every single Bond film up to this point, I am glad to see that the franchise is beginning to modernize a little more while maintaining the old flavor.

Though the movie as a whole was fantastic, I will say one thing that struck me as negative. For anyone who has not seen a film in the series before, the nods to the Bonds of the past will be lost on you, and the whole thing may seem a little goofy. In that sense, someone watching “Spectre” with no prior knowledge of the Bond films could see the film as oddly ritualistic and too focused on tying the previous Craig films together.

Craig made a great James Bond, and I will be sad to see him leave the franchise. But, we all know Sean Connery is still the king of Bond films, and hopefully Craig’s successor will be of the Connery quality. Don’t get me wrong; Craig’s performance was great starting in “Casino Royale,” and his ending in “Spectre” was magnificent, but it is the end of an era, and I am ready for the next Bond man.

Whether you are a Bond fan already, or haven’t seen any Bond films yet, I encourage you to watch a few. Although Craig’s other Bond films may have been tied together in “Spectre,” you don’t necessarily have to have seen them before watching this movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone, Bond fan or not, because it is the freshest rendition of a timeless series and a well made film.

Entertaining and Sports Programming Network Football Club (ESPN FC) pundits hailed the nail-biting playoff between the Kansas City Sporting and the Portland Timbers as being the best…

Entertaining and Sports Programming Network Football Club (ESPN FC) pundits hailed the nail-biting playoff between the Kansas City Sporting and the Portland Timbers as being the best Major League Soccer (MLS) playoff penalty shootout in the history of the MLS competition. Although Sporting Kansas City lost in the end, the game itself will be one that goes down in MLS history.

The game, although not great in terms of technical prowess, showed great spirit by both teams. Initially the Timbers were up 1-0 after the 57th minute. Then Kevin Ellis pulled a goal back for Sporting in the 87th minute, leading to extra time.

Extra time led to even more excitement with Kristian Nemeth scoring a goal for Sporting in the 96th minute. It looked like Sporting had found their way to a comeback despite losing their starting goalkeeper, Tim Melia, to injury before extra time began. However, it was not meant to be. Just two minutes before the end of extra time the Timbers scored, which led to the game being decided on a penalty kick shootout.

Things then became even more interesting with all 11 players on the field at the end of extra time taking penalty kicks. Sporting KC hit the post twice, and one of those shots managed to hit both posts and still not fall into the back of the net. The Timbers ultimately won on a penalty kick and a save from their goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey.

While Sporting KC did not end up winning the game and continuing in the competition, they did have the chance to be part of one of the most back and forth games in MLS playoff history. Both Sporting KC and the Portland Timbers fans can agree that the game is an instant classic. While many Sporting fans are upset that they did not win, they can at least take solace in the fact that enriching the history of the league is not altogether a loss.

Futsal or “Futebol de salão,” otherwise known as “room football,” is a sport that is not well known by most Americans. In its most basic…

Futsal or “Futebol de salão,” otherwise known as “room football,” is a sport that is not well known by most Americans. In its most basic form, it is soccer played on a basketball court with smaller goals, and fewer players.

The game of futsal originated in Brazil in the 1930s and 1940s where it was played as a much smaller version of soccer to make up for the lack of space for full-sized soccer fields. Futsal was and is a way for people of all ages to enjoy a form of organized soccer in a much smaller space.

Although futsal originated as an alternative to full field soccer, many of the world’s greatest players started their soccer careers playing futsal. The likes of Pele, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Xavi and Ronaldo all credit futsal as the reason their skill improved so significantly as children.

The basic rules of futsal are relatively straightforward. All rules of regular soccer apply, but the ball is one size smaller than usual and weighted, and there are five players for each side with unlimited substitutions available. The games are much shorter than full soccer, with only 24-minute halves.

Although futsal originated in the streets of Brazil, many young soccer players in the United States now play futsal at the club level, usually up until the age of about 18, in order to become better players.

Here in Kansas City, Heartland Futsal is an organization that local players use, primarily to play almost every weekend during the winter months.

While the international futsal scene is not huge, there is a Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) affiliated world cup for futsal every four years, with Spain, Brazil and Portugal being the “heavyweights” of that competition.

A current star that plays futsal in the Portuguese futsal leagues is Ricardinho. Here, you can see the amount of skill that is showcased by Ricardinho.
