“We heard about a trip to Thailand and thought it sounded awesome so we talked to Jeff Buscher about it,” said Bittel. “The group that they partner with in Thailand is called the Upland Holistic Development Project, or the UHDP. Their main endeavor is to help out the marginalized hill tribes in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Most of these people are refugees that come from surrounding countries like Myanmar, Laos or Cambodia. They fled their countries for various reasons, usually political unrest or military complications.”

“These people are allowed to live in Thailand, but they don’t have citizenship, they don’t have rights, they don’t have healthcare,” said Bittel. “They kind of get a similar treatment to the way that we treated Native Americans. They are placed on infertile land that has been slashed and burned, so they struggle to grow their own food. The UHDP aims to better their lives in all facets. They work on things like sustainable agriculture, citizenship issues, women’s empowerment – stuff like that.”

Bittel reached out to the organization, which had expressed an interest in his knowledge of aquaponics.

“I’ve been working on aquaponics systems for a couple of years now,” said Bittel. “Aquaponics is basically a system which uses plants suspended in water and then you add nutrients. You use fish, and when the fish waste gets nitrified by bacteria, it becomes useful to the plants. So it is an enclosed system where you can grow and eat fish and grow and eat vegetables as well. These people are tight on space and have limited resources, so they have a great need for aquaponics. A lot of them already cultivate their own fish, so it was a good fit for them.”

“Before going to Thailand, we took a seven-week prep class through the village partners program,” said Bittel. “The main point that they were trying to drive home to us was that there is a right way and a wrong way to go about service work. We learned about how service trips can often be devastating to the indigenous cultures that they try to help, either by disempowering them or creating dependency. That was a huge thing that we kept in mind during our trip. We tried to help these people in a way that was sustainable, in a way that they could take what we taught them and they could reproduce it and teach it to other people in the surrounding areas.”

“We were there for two weeks,” said Bittel. “We spent all of our time living in a bunkhouse in the project center, about three hours north of Chiang Mai. The center is set up like one big representation of what an ideal self-sustaining village can look like in Northern Thailand. The project center is also used as a demonstration area, where they educate people from surrounding villages.”

Bittel didn’t spend his entire trip working. He also got to experience some of the tourist attractions of Thailand.

“We spent two nights in Chang Mai which is the second largest city in Thailand,” said Bittel. “One night, we went to a Buddhist temple considered the second holiest place in Thailand. It’s up on top of a mountain, right near the border between Myanmar and Thailand. You climb up to this giant temple and the top overlooks the entire valley of Northern Thailand. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. It was surreal. That place is absolutely nuts.”

An overview of the executive orders, memoranda and proclamations the president has passed in his first weeks in Office Less than a month ago, Donald…

An overview of the executive orders, memoranda and proclamations the president has passed in his first weeks in Office

Less than a month ago, Donald Trump became our new president, sparking massive controversy and upheaval from communities across the United States. By the standard of previous presidencies, Trump seems to have compressed the first hundred days of his administration into six, publicly enacting 13 decisive actions before the close of his first official week in office. This unexpected hyperactivity has triggered a wide range of reactions across William Jewell College’s campus.

Contrary to popular belief, not all of these actions have been executive orders. Of the thirteen actions that appeared in his first week, only four are executive orders, eight are presidential memoranda and one is a proclamation. According to “USA Today,” the difference between an executive order and a memorandum is minute. In essence, a memorandum is a less official version of an executive order. An executive order is legally required to be published in the Federal Register, but there is no provision that memoranda need to be published at all. Trump, however, has published some of his memoranda on the White House website for public viewing. While executive orders and memoranda both apply to the internal workings of the government, presidential proclamations are more relevant to those outside of the government and tend to have fewer political implications. For example, Trump’s first proclamation of his presidency, enacted Jan. 22, is entitled the “National School Choice Week 2017 Proclamation.” It commends the nation’s schools and teachers, and renews the commitment to allowing both students and parents a choice in where to attend school, as opposed to the current system, in which school choice is a matter of location.

Trump’s executive orders and memoranda are significantly more controversial than his proclamations. His first four executive orders are as follows: Minimizing the Economic Burden of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Pending Repeal, released Jan. 20; Expediting Environmental Reviews and Approvals for High Priority Infrastructure Projects, released Jan. 24; Border Security and Immigration Improvements, released Jan. 25; and Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States, released Jan. 25. A few of his most controversial memoranda regard the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, a hiring freeze in the executive branch, the Mexico City Policy and the United States withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership Negotiations and Agreement.

Trump’s next weeks in office did not show any intention of slowing down. Jan. 30, he signed an executive order enacting staunch immigration restrictions on citizens* from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen for 120 days. Syrian refugees are banned from entering the United States until further notice. Many American citizens have responded with adamant protest, demonstrating at airports across the country.

Jewell students from both political parties are concerned about the backlash of Trump’s actions. Rebecca Wolfe, chairman of the William Jewell Democrats commented on the decision.

“I was shocked by President Trump’s executive order banning refugees from seven Muslim countries,” said Wolfe. “It’s unsurprising that he took a hardline stance on refugees from these countries, but the ban has affected our legitimacy in the eyes of our allies who, due to their proximity to countries experiencing massive migratory shifts, do not have the ability to prevent refugees from turning up on their borders.”

Chairman of William Jewell College Republicans and junior political science and international relations major, Jameson O’Connor, expressed hesitancies about Trump’s tactfulness in executing his actions.

“Across the border with all of these executive orders, when you paint with a broad brush, you can become kind of inaccurate and discriminate with your policy.”

However, O’Connor stated that there are legitimate reasons for the executive decision. “I don’t really think it hurts when carefully applied, and this is coming from a second generation American,” said O’Connor. “My grandparents immigrated from Ireland, so I understand the sensitive nature of immigration, but national security comes before it.”

Although generally dispirited with Trump’s administration, Wolfe has indicated approval of some of Trump’s actions. “He has vowed to continue Obama’s executive order that put legal protections in place for LGBTQ+ workers,” said Wolfe. “Additionally, he handled Iran’s ballistic missile testing by sanctioning several individuals and companies from the country. The ability to act decisively is an important quality in the American president; deterrence depends on the credibility of threat. That credibility, if maintained and curated, will allow us to influence Iran without making war more likely.” (For more context on this point, please refer to the transcript of the article here.)

She added that Trump’s moderate plans concerning Israeli settlements are practical.

“I am hoping that Trump will maintain this stance after talks with Netanyahu. This would be beneficial to America’s reputation on the world stage,” said Wolfe.

In spite of the present unrest about the new administration, Jewell students are advocating for optimism. “I hope people have more faith in our system of government,” said O’Connor, “and if and when he goes too far, there is this thing called checks and balances, and it’s proved pretty effective in the past.”

Wolfe made a similar point.

“We live in a time of enormous anxiety from within and without the United States,” Wolfe said. “I am deeply encouraged by the distinctly American response to these anxieties. From marches to boycotts to petitions to hashtags, Americans have remained an adversarial people whose right to criticize the government is both valued and deeply ingrained.”

Jewell’s campus is eagerly watching Trump’s administration, and is committed to maintaining a positive outlook about the future of our country.

*A previous version of the article referred to the citizens as “Muslims,” but we recognize the immigration ban was intended for all of the citizens in the seven banned countries, not just Muslims. In another article, the ban was explained correctly. The editors regret the mistake.

Greek life was introduced to the Hill in 1886, when the College was still an all-male institution. It began with the founding of the Phi Gamma Delta [FIJI]-Zeta Phi chapter, followed a year later by the establishment of Kappa Alpha Order-Alpha Delta chapter, the Sigma Nu-Beta Chi chapter in 1894 and the Lambda Chi Alpha-Epsilon Nu chapter in 1942. The first sorority on campus was the Alpha Gamma Delta-Epsilon Epsilon chapter, established in 1946. Three years later, Alpha Delta Pi-Gamma Nu chapter was established, followed by the Delta Zeta-Zeta Rho chapter in 1961 and Zeta Tau Alpha-Delta Chi chapter in 1964.

Although fraternities and sororities observe spring recruitment, the processes are very different. “All the men have to go to each house and each house has a night, then they have to fill out a preference card,” said Sara Bailey, Jewell’s Panhellenic Advisor. “Their bid day structure is that all of the chapters can offer bids to whoever meets their expectations to receive a bid, so they could potentially receive one, two, or three bids.”

Unlike the sororities, there are no restrictions on how many men can accept bids for each fraternity. “The most exciting aspect of rush week itself is getting the preference cards back every night to see what your potential new members are rating you,” Troy Williams, the FIJI president, said. “That’s also probably the most stressful time of the week because sometimes guys will give you ratings that you don’t expect, which can be both positive and negative.”

Sororities, however, have three nights of recruitment. On the first night, philanthropy night, the women visit each of the four houses. On the second night, called sisterhood night, the women are invited back to one, two or three of the sororities, based on mutual preference. On the last night, preference night, the women attend either one or two parties, after which they turn in a preference card. “I work with an RFM specialist and we go through the computer system to match everyone with a bid if possible, so it’s a lot of math,” Bailey said.

She explained that for the sorority recruitment process, there are two important numbers: quota and total. “Quota is the number of women who can join each chapter through recruitment. Total is the chapter size after recruitment. The goal is to make sure that chapters are the same size as much as possible across campus.”

While Williams said that the mechanics of fraternity recruitment are relatively static, there was one major change in sorority recruitment this year: the elimination of skit night, which has traditionally occurred instead of Sisterhood Night. Bailey explained that the Unanimous Agreements section of the National Panhellenic Conference, which binds all sororities on Jewell’s campus, has transitioned away from using skits during recruitment, although she was unsure of the reason behind the decision. Instead of skits, the sororities decided to make sisterhood videos that they could share with their potential new members.

“During the fall semester, our chapter was not sure what to expect for this night of recruitment since it would be new for everyone,” said Bailey Breeding, former president of Delta Zeta. “We chose to focus on what sisterhood means to us and what it looks like in our chapter. I think this change was tough since Skit Night was always fun, but our women embraced the change and enjoyed this night of Recruitment too.”

The campus is enthusiastic about welcoming this new class of Greek men and women and supporting their presence on the Hill. Although she was not involved in Greek Life during her time at Hiram College, President Elizabeth MacLeod Walls acknowledged Jewell’s high retention rate of Greek Life students. “When students feel connected, they are more likely to feel supported,” she said. “And that allows them to navigate some of the challenges that come with moving away from home and adapting to a rigorous learning environment.”

Breeding agreed, saying that “Greek organizations also empower their members to be involved and well-rounded.”

The FIJI chapter has discussed their goals for the upcoming semester, and has dedicated themselves to promoting Greek Unity. “[We] think it’s important that we support each other, whether it be our philanthropic events or sharing what works and what doesn’t work within our own chapters,” Williams said. “I also think it’s important that we think of creative ways to create a space that involves people who aren’t in Greek organizations to be a part of unity on the Hill.”

The leadership of Greek Life has resolved to maintain a positive impact on Jewell’s campus this semester, both between organizations, with the staff and with non-Greek students in the hopes that this new Greek class will carry on strong traditions and continue to benefit their community.
