Shalane Flanagan, a Massachusetts native and Oregon resident, ran an unofficial time of two hours, 26 minutes and 53 seconds to beat three-time consecutive winner Mary Keitany of Kenya.

This was the first time any American has won the NYC Marathon since Meb Keflezighi won the men’s competition in 2009.

Two other American women, Allie Kieffer and Kellyn Taylor, were just minutes behind. The race was the first in history in which three American women broke a time of two hours and 30 minutes.

Thirty-six-year-old Flanagan has had a successful running career. She received two individual cross-country titles during her time at the University of North Carolina, holds records in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter indoor races for America and after the disqualification of a competitor that beat her, was awarded second place in the 2008 Olympics for the 10,000-meter race. Flanagan has said that she will be retiring after this race.

The winner of the men’s competition was Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor. Kamworor ran a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds to beat the second-place contester, Wilson Kipsang of Kenya, by merely three seconds. This was Kamworor’s first win in his seven NYC Marathons. He has received a total of nine silver and gold medals from various world championship races since 2014.

Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze

Although heading to the pumpkin patch may be one of the most basic activities you can participate in during the fall, Carolyn’s Country Cousin Pumpkin Patch and the neighboring Liberty Corn Maze have the potential to provide a lovely escape from the Hill. Get the squad together, see who can pick the largest pumpkin, get lost in the corn maze and cuddle up with a goat all in one convenient location 10 minutes from campus. Be careful not to miss out on your perfect opportunity to get your own Instagram photos or take your Jewell crush on a simple but cute date. The last day Carolyn’s is open is Halloween.

Haunted Houses

If you are looking for a little bit more thrill than the five miles per hour hay-ride at the pumpkin patch, haunted houses are the obvious go-to. Hit up Kansas City’s West Bottoms and take a tour of the most popular haunted houses in town. The Edge of Hell, Beast and Macabre Cinema haunted attractions neighbor each other and even offer passes that allow you entry to any combination at discount prices.

Tickets can be a bit pricey for the haunted houses in West Bottoms, $27, $45 and $65 for one, two and three different attractions, respectively, so if you want the biggest bang for your buck, consider buying a Worlds of Fun day pass. Commit a Saturday to ride the rollercoasters during the day and experience their Haunt event at night. A regular entry ticket runs for about $59, but if you have a friend who happens to have a gold season pass, your entry for an entire day of Halloween excitement can be as inexpensive as $20.

On-Campus Celebrations

Leaving campus can sometimes be a bit difficult when you’re swimming in Calculus 1 assignments and core curriculum papers. However, that shouldn’t limit you from enjoying your Halloween. Friday Oct. 27, visit the first-year triangle to enjoy fire-pits, smores, pumpkin painting and a classic Halloween movie.

Lambda Chi Alpha’s Pumpkin Smash is Oct. 28,  so you can take your midterm frustrations out on innocent pumpkins.

Top off your on-campus Halloween celebrations by dancing the night away at Phi Gamma Delta’s Halloween party on advising day eve, Oct. 30, without the stress of class the next day.

If you’re balling on a budget, slide over to Savers to create the perfect costume, or, if you’re feeling boujee, hit up the local Party City superstore.

If you are alcohol approved and none of the events above suits your fancy, celebrate your Halloween by cracking open a cold one with the boys and taking advantage of the designated drinking zones under the new alcohol policy while watching some Halloween favorites on Netflix. Currently, Netflix has “The Addams Family,” “Jaws,” “Young Frankenstein” and more. It’s the least you could do to unwind in the heat of the semester.

Wear Pants

Fall weather is here on the hill, and it is time to start dressing like it. Guys, that means unless you’re doing something athletic, put the shorts and take socks away. Wear pants. I don’t mean sweatpants either, although we are all in college and bumming around from time to time can be nice. Rock a nice pair of clean, dark jeans or chinos.

When it comes to jeans, simple is better. Don’t wear jeans with complex designs on the back pockets. Top off the look with a nice roll at the ankle. The roll creates a break between the pants and the shoes to give your look a smooth transition. For a classic look, roll the jeans to where the pant rests slightly on top of your shoe. For a laid back “athleisure” approach, go for the tight roll and wear no-show socks.

Layers Pull it All Together

If you study in the Pryor Learning Commons often, you’ve likely already been wearing layers inside. But now the weather permits layers outside, too. Jackets, hoodies and button-down shirts make great additions to any outfit. Take any look to the next level with a slick bomber jacket, a classic jean jacket or a simple hoodie.

If you choose to wear the jean jacket, I recommend khaki or colored pants, but if you must wear jeans remember to wear jeans that are darker than the color of the jacket. Avoid gaudy logos and aim for darker colors to maximize your fall aesthetic. Maroon and olive are classic fall colors and, when topped off with brown accessories, can give you the freshest look on the hill.

Shoes Make the Outfit

Shoes can make your outfit what it is. Whether you’re attempting a relaxed look, going for the newly popular athleisure look or trying to look well put together but casual, shoes are your answer.

“247 Luxe” sneakers, New Balance

Vans, Stan Smiths or Chucks are the go to when you’re pulling together your casual look. Since you’ll be wearing pants, high tops are a great move, but if you choose to wear low tops you extend your pants options to the tight roll.

“Hario_r” boots, Aldo

A nice pair of low top tennis shoes can look good with the tight roll too, if you want to give off an athletic vibe. Otherwise, fall is the perfect time to rock a nice pair of boots or a pair of casual brogues. Brown boots match the aesthetic of fall perfectly, but you could do a tan or black boot as well. If you’re feeling extra stylish, try out a pair of velvet Chelsea or Jodhpur boots. If you are investing in boots for the first time, know that leather is worth the investment. It looks great and will last forever.
