On Feb. 28, the Golden Globes hosted its 78th annual award show. The broadcast looked different this year in order to comply with COVID-19 restrictions. 

The hosts – Amy Poehler and Tina Fey – were in two different locations, with the footage spliced together to make it seem like they were still together. Throughout the night, the winners didn’t walk onto a stage to accept their award. Instead, they made speeches from the comfort of their homes. 

While the winners of the evening were notably diverse compared to previous winners lists, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is still under scrutiny surrounding the issue of diversity. The company said that it is “committed to immediate ‘transformational change’ and reforms.”

The night did see several big winners including “Nomadland” with two Golden Globes, “Borat” and  “The Queen’s Gambit” with two, and “The Crown” with four. A full list of 2021 winners can be found below.

Despite the somewhat turbulent state of the world, the Golden Globes still went on. Although it looked different this year, as most things do thanks to COVID-19, the program was able to provide a message of unity through the diversity presented, while allowing for the audience to focus on nothing but film and television, even if it was for just a short time.
