Despite being one of the smallest liberal arts colleges in the country, William Jewell College has long been a well-regarded institution in the Kansas City area. This reputation is due not only to its high academic standards but also to its athletic prowess: nearly two-thirds of Jewell’s students participate in sports, making athletics a central part of student life and recruitment.

However, the 2025-2026 academic year began under unusual circumstances. After years of financial difficulties, Jewell declared financial exigency during the 2024-2025 academic year, a rare and serious measure that reflects the severity of the challenges facing the institution. Although the administration emphasized that the situation remained manageable, the announcement plunged the university community into a state of heightened uncertainty.

For student-athletes, the impact is particularly pronounced. As the school was reevaluating financial priorities, the possibility of reshaping athletics and cutting specific programs seemed very real. As a result, the student athlete experience now oscillates between relative stability on the field and constant questions off it.

Jewell student athletes have always had to deal with busy schedules and high expectations, but in the spring semester of 2025, these pressures intensified. The athletic medical staff made a controversial proposal to increase student secondary insurance fees (special insurance for athletes designed to cover the remaining medical expenses related to sports injuries) by an additional $350 for student athletes. Although this fee was intended to protect players’ health and ensure they had medical coverage, it was perceived by many student athletes as an additional financial burden, particularly when combined with rising tuition fees and a temporary freeze on scholarships. In other words, no athlete will see their scholarship increased for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Compounding this unease, a wave of athletes transferred out of Jewell during the last semester. For those who remained, one question lingers at every practice and every game: What will athletics at Jewell look like next semester? Softball, for example, has faced one of the most visible challenges. The team’s head coach resigned at the end of last semester, leaving players in a precarious situation as the season approaches. However, the administration took an unusual and refreshing step: it directly involved the players in the interview process for hiring a new coach. Indeed, the players will have a say on the final hiring decision. This level of athlete involvement is rare at the university level and marks a significant shift toward greater student participation in program decisions.

Although the declaration of financial exigency cast a shadow over the athletic department, it also reignited crucial debates about transparency, resource allocation, and the future of sports at Jewell. The story of Jewell softball highlights the vulnerability of sports at small universities, where limited resources make athletic programs particularly sensitive to personnel changes and enrollment fluctuations. However, Jewell’s willingness to involve players in decision-making could also pave the way for new models of resilience.

For now, the semester seems too short to judge whether athletics at Jewell will emerge stronger or even more fragile. But what is clear is that the student-athlete experience at William Jewell is being reshaped, in real time, by the financial crossroads at which the university finds itself.

Who Was Pope Francis?

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away Monday, April 21 on Easter Monday—a day rich in symbolism for Christians around the world.

Originally from Argentina and the first non-European pope in more than a millennium, he leaves behind an indelible legacy within the Catholic Church. And yet, looking back, nothing seemed to predestine Bergoglio to ascend to the highest position in the church. Named after St. Francis of Assisi, his humanist values and simple lifestyle became the cornerstone of his papacy. But what lessons can we draw from his time as pope?

A Reformist Pope?

The choice of the name Francis was far from trivial. A Jesuit by background — an order rooted in education, service and social justice — Pope Francis aligned himself with the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi, who preached humility and poverty. His papacy was marked by a deep concern for the oppressed and for the structural inequalities that divide humanity.

One of his most visible battles was against xenophobia, particularly condemning the actions of western governments toward migrants. These efforts demonstrated his deep commitment to humanitarian causes. In a world increasingly marked by division and fear of the “other,” Pope Francis embodied the belief that love and compassion can still guide us.

He broke long-standing taboos when he famously said, “If a person is gay and seeks God and has goodwill, who am I to judge?” Later in his papacy, he went further, authorizing blessings for same-sex couples. These gestures, though modest by some standards, represented significant steps toward a more inclusive church. In this way, Pope Francis sought to break with the past and champion a vision of Christianity rooted in love and acceptance — principles that defined his 12 years at the helm of the Vatican.

Some Things Never Change

Despite his progressive image marked by strong advocacy for human dignity and condemnation of growing inequalities, Pope Francis faced serious criticism for his handling of sexual abuse scandals within the Church. This deep-rooted issue, which continues to tarnish the institution, was not met with the decisive action many had hoped for. Although he issued some condemnations and initiated reforms, his response was often seen as tepid and inconsistent.

The recent revelations surrounding Abbé Pierre only reinforced this perception. While Pope Francis claimed that the Vatican became aware of Abbé Pierre’s misconduct years after his death, multiple sources indicate the Vatican had knowledge of his Abbé Pierre’s wrongdoings as early as 1955. Pope Francis’ approach to the issue underscored the complex institutional dynamics and longstanding patterns in how the Church has addressed abuse allegations in the past.

Despite this scandal, Pope Francis nonetheless leaves behind a vision of hope and compassion. But now, the question turns to the future: What comes next?

What Can We Expect From the Upcoming Conclave?

According to church tradition, a new pope is elected within 15 to 20 days of the previous pope’s death. A conclave — a gathering of cardinals tasked with electing the next pope — will soon convene. As dramatized in Edward Berger’s recent film Conclave this process is often full of intrigue and unpredictability. While there may be favorites, the final choice frequently defies expectations.

This election carries significant weight. Pope Francis expanded the church’s global reach by appointing numerous cardinals from Africa and Southeast Asia and championing a more inclusive worldview. But with democratic institutions retreating and nationalist movements gaining momentum across Europe and the United States, the progressive momentum he initiated now hangs in the balance.

The next pope will have enormous influence over the church’s direction. With more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, his voice will matter. Beyond theological and social priorities, he will also face the urgent task of reforming the Vatican’s finances and, most critically, addressing the institutional failures that have allowed sexual abuse to persist.

Photo by Markus Spiske via Uplash.

As the National Basketball Association slowly approaches the end of the regular season, a cataclysm has turned the world of American basketball upside down. Like every year, the winter transfer period brought its share of surprises. However, the controversy arose at the very beginning of February when the trade of Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers was announced. So controversial was this trade that it is already considered by many to be the biggest trade in modern NBA history.

But why is the fate of two superstars so controversial? Well, the context in which the transaction took place and what it implies for both teams is simply huge. For those who don’t follow the NBA, this trade would be comparable to a transfer in the premier league between Virgil Van Dijk and Cole Palmer, or in football terms, like trading Jalen Hurts for Travis Kelce: two legends of their sport but with a significant age gap. As the world of the NBA is slowly recovering from this year’s chaotic trade season, what are some implications of the Doncic-Davis trade for the players, the franchises as well as the NBA as a whole.

The deal of the century for the Lakers?

First of all, let’s break down the ins and outs of this trade, which appears to be nothing less than the steal of the century for the Lakers. Indeed, the 25-year-old guard was traded along with Maxi Kleber and Markiff Morris in exchange for 31-year-old center Anthony Davis, Max Christie and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick. While on the surface this transaction appears to be a fair and equitable swap of two superstars, it is a very profitable deal for the Los Angeles Lakers. Lebron James, one of the most accomplished player in the league, recently announced that he would be retiring within the next few seasons, which means one thing and one thing only for the Lakers: they’ve just acquired the new face of their franchise.

This trade makes perfect sense for the California franchise, which is in the process of restructuring its team around Luka Doncic. The Dallas Mavericks on the other hand seem to be at a disadvantage by replacing the superstar who had taken them to the NBA Finals just a few months earlier. Sure, Anthony Davis is a terrific player, but he’s turning 32 in less than two weeks and is no longer in his prime. This trade is seen by many Dallas fans as outrageous, not least because no sports manager in his right mind would validate such an exchange. So how did this trade come about?

NBA: a cruel market?

Luka Doncic is a 25-year-old player originally from Slovenia who has been in the league for over 6 years and is rightly regarded by many basketball fans as a generational talent and MVP caliber player. No one had imagined the possibility of such a trade, and his superstar status seemed to give him a kind of immunity. Top players usually control their own destiny and have a voice in potential trade discussions. Unfortunately, this reasoning is not true in today’s NBA. The NBA has become a global brand and, like other major sports leagues, it tends to behave like a big business that seeks profit and publicity above all else.

The organization’s revenues have increased enormously, as have the salaries of NBA players, which have quadrupled in around 25 years, reaching an average of 8.2 million dollars a year by 2021-2022. Some fans even argue that this exchange highlights the NBA’s effort to fuel a storyline that would make the game entertaining. However, in doing so, the players no longer seem to be what matters most. Although denied by Patrick Dumont, owner of the Mavericks, the rumor that the Dallas basketball franchise will soon be transferred to Las Vegas is still widespread and only adds to fans’ feelings about the true motivations of NBA owners. Something has gone fundamentally wrong in the way the league is run.

Should the NBA change the rules?

The Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis swap has reignited a lively debate on the NBA’s rules governing player movements, raising some rather alarming questions about the league’s priorities. In a system where stability is rare, franchises can hardly build coherent teams. What makes this exchange even more troubling is that it is said to have taken place behind closed doors, with neither player apparently aware of the negotiations until the deal was finalized.

Currently, only two NBA players have an official no-trade clause (Lebron James and Bradley Beal), leaving most athletes vulnerable to sudden moves. Some critics have even compared the NBA’s trade system to “modern-day slavery,” as Dennis Schröder once controversially described it. While it’s problematic to compare NBA trades to slavery, perhaps it’s time for the league to reconsider its policies and adopt a model similar to European soccer, where players have more control over their careers. Until then, transactions like these will continue to reshape the league, often at the expense of the players, indispensable to the league’s success.

You should be proud that you made it through. Being a student athlete is very challenging, whatever the results, it’s important to recognize your dedication and efforts. This article is a recap of the fall team sports season for our William Jewell Cardinals.

Football: What a season it was for the football team, which got off to a strong start with 3 straight conference wins. It’s worth mentioning that the Cardinals had their best season in 10 years, with an overall record of 5-6. Indeed, these very encouraging results bode well for the coming years, which will hopefully enable the Cardinals to have a winning record and reach the postseason phase. In addition, the Cardinals have also made a name for themselves this season with 4 GLVC player of the week awards won, as well as a career high of 1000 rushing yards in one season for our running back, Keaundre McCullough.

Volleyball: The women’s volleyball team had a difficult season with disappointing results. With an overall record of 7-22 and 1-12 in conference, the season failed to live up to expectations, despite a conference victory over Missouri S&T on Oct. 11. Although this season was marked by lack of success and doubt, Samantha Thompson and Bella Laporta showed exceptional leadership by leading the team with very strong performances. Thompson reached the impressive milestone of 2000 career assists, a huge achievement. As for Laporta, she was very effective offensively, with 409 kills this season. Well done to them both!

Women’s soccer: Head coach Emily Key and her staff can be proud of the women’s soccer team that has had its best season since 2018. This season could mark the start of a new era for this talented team, which won 4 games this season. Although they did not win, these 4 victories are a clear improvement on previous seasons. In fact, this team is full of potential, driven by attacking talents such as Lux Sands, with 6 goals and two assists, and Riley Frasure-Smith, with 3 goals and 4 assists. Although they didn’t make it to the conference tournament, they can be proud of their season.

Men’s soccer: The men’s soccer team is one of the great success stories of the fall season. In a season marked by very promising results, the team came close to qualifying for the GLVC conference tournament. It was head Coach Eddie Horn’s best season since he arrived at Jewell 5 years ago, as well as the program’s best season since 2012, with an overall record of 5-8-4. What’s more, this success is partly due to Zach Nichols, a very talented forward whose 6 goals and 1 assist led the team. Let’s hope this momentum carries the team to an even better season next year.

In summation, this fall season has been full of surprises with ups and downs for every team. But it’s important to recognize the efforts, despite the final results. Congratulations to all the student athletes who work hard every day to be as good as they can be – and good luck to all the sports preparing to compete in the spring. Go Cardinals!
