Holy Grounds Coffee Shop, located underneath Saint James Church, is an eclectic coffee shop located one block from Downtown Liberty Square. They opened over the summer, and word of the new coffee shop quickly spread to local homeowners, and now, to students, staff and faculty at William Jewell College. The church exterior is currently under renovation, and some of the proceeds from the coffee shop go towards the renovation of the church’s steeple.

St. James Church Street View. Photo by Hope Peck.

The walk from Jewell to Holy Grounds is around 10 minutes. Google Maps will tell you 13, but if you have long legs and/or embrace your inner New Yorker, it will take you 10. It is a nice walk through the historic neighborhoods of Liberty. Since the space is not a traditional coffee shop, it is quite an adventure. The front door to the coffee shop is on the south entrance of the church and down the stairs to the church’s basement.

The space is full of old books from the church’s library. alls that are not covered in books showcase the church organist’s original paintings. The dark oak of the table and bar creates a lovely, warm feel that contrasts with clean white spaces. They are always playing Gregorian chants or Anglican choir music, so, depending on your relationship with religion, you may find it peaceful and centering. However, if you are not used to being in church settings, you may find it a little strange. If you are not interested in the music, there is plenty of seating on their patio with shade and a peaceful ambience.

Patio of Holy Grounds. Photo by Hope Peck.

The coffee shop’s menu is pretty standard, though a lot of their products are sourced from local small businesses. They roast their own coffee and they brew tea from Anna Marie’s Teas on the Liberty Square. I love their matcha because it is more on the gritty side. Their ratio of matcha to milk is the best in Liberty; many other local coffee shops dilute their matcha to the point where it is basically just green milk. Their espresso-based drinks are fine compared to the local standards of Liberty, but their espresso is just not quite up-to-par in my opinion. If you consider yourself a coffee snob like me, I would recommend getting a tea, a matcha or a drink with one of their many syrups. They make most of their syrups in-house, including my two favorites: vanilla lavender and cinnamon almond coconut.

A Matcha to go. Photo by Hope Peck.

There are many food options including pastries, and an extensive menu of more savory foods. Plus, they always have fudge samples from a local fudge maker up in Kearney.

Overall, it is a lovely walk from campus and a quiet place to study or hang out with friends. If you try it out, I recommend trying the fudge and getting a drink with one of their homemade syrups.

These photos feature the aesthetic, spring feeling of Liberty Square. I have lived in Liberty for 16 years and love the calm and cute feeling of the small business shops. The square is the perfect one-stop-shop for spring break pictures, shopping <g class="gr_ gr_8 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="8" data-gr-id="8">and</g> even some concerts. Downtown Liberty is a close and inexpensive way to have a staycation during your spring break. I wanted to share the spring feeling my friends and I get when spending spring break in Liberty! Be sure to check out our article on spring break locations close to Jewell.

It’s always high time for pie at Liberty’s new pie and dessert shop. Pie Time, located next to Nickel and Suede and Bittersweet Apothecary at 111 N. Water Street, is the perfect place to go to satisfy those cravings that no dorm room mug cake can.

Pie Time opened Dec. 8. Since opening, they have been a part of Let’s Wine About Winter and offered Christmas and Valentine’s Day specials.

The Hilltop Monitor spoke to owner Christine Crouch about choosing this location. She notes the Liberty Square’s ability to draw people out as a big reason why she chose to open Pie Time on the Square.

“A lot more people want to come down here and shop so it has a very homey feel to be in this location,” Crouch said.

The shop is airy and cheerful. The kitchen can be seen from the entry, giving the small space a cozy, comforting feel.

Pie is a very homey dessert spot. It’s labor intensive and reminiscent of family tradition. Crouch credits her love for baking to her childhood.

“When I was about 9 or 10 I was in 4-H so I did cooking and sewing and my grandmother was the project leader for the classes,” Crouch said. “I learned a lot of things from her on cooking.”

Crouch has not always been able to use her baking skills as part of her career. Before opening Pie Time, she ran an event venue in Liberty. She has also worked for Liberty Public Schools and been an air traffic controller.

Despite these diverse careers, baking has always been a passion for Crouch.

“I’ve always liked baking pies and cooking for other people,” said Crouch.

Crouch’s favorite flavors of pie to make are chocolate, peanut butter and cherry. She makes a wide assortment of flavors and also offers hand pies, cookies and cakes.

The chocolate and cherry varieties of hand pies are spectacular. The crust is buttery, flaky and superior to any pie crust I’ve had before. The filling is just the right amount of sweet and there is an excellent crust to filling ratio.

Call ahead at 816-651-8685 or email at pietimeliberty@gmail.com to order a pie or a sampler box of a variety of the desserts offered at Pie Time.

Hammerhand becomes the newest local business.

Sip, guzzle or swish, the new java joint in Liberty is ready to filter and fuel the rest of the semester.

Ditch the coffee maker in the dorm room and head to the Hammerhand Coffee shop on the Liberty Square. The shop is at 22 North Main St. and will be open frothing milk for cappuccinos next week. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to stay up-to-date on the exact opening day.

“The mission of Hammerhand is simply to serve the people of Liberty and the KC area the best that we can by creating a comfortable, welcoming environment where you can get a surprisingly good cup of coffee,” said operating partner Alex Merrell.

Grinding out single brewed cups of coffee with the help of top-of-the-line equipment, Hammerhand offers quality and consistency. The shop will also be serving up nibbles and tidbits, such as yogurt with granola and decadent croissants from Sasha’s Bakery in Kansas City.

Add a new scene to the regular blend—the new space will be great for college students needing to knock out a study session with back room seating, plenty of outlets, free Wi-Fi and a double shot of espresso on the side.

Or trade in the laptop and jolt some life into a friendship by bringing a pal to sip a mocha and shoot the breeze.

Scarred forever by the atrocity of instant coffee? The shop will also offer options other than java.

“If you aren’t a coffee drinker, we will have a line of craft sodas, great teas and the best hot chocolate you have ever tasted,” said Merrell. “Also, during the fall and winter months we will have apple cider mulled with ginger and spices.”

Hammerhand is initiating a buzz by planning a grand opening at Thursday Night Throwdown (TNT). The night will include latte art competitions, food, drinks and fun of grande proportions.

That aroma wafting in the air is Counter Culture Coffee from Durham, North Carolina that the shop will be brewing.

“In my biased opinion, they [Counter Culture Coffee] are one of the best roasters in the country. They roast some of the best coffees I have ever tasted and they have a focused commitment to sustainability and development of the countries and farms that they buy from,” said Merrell.

To add a little something novel in your mug, the shop will also feature a local roaster. Showcased first in the line up will be Post Coffee from Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Hammerhead will also be serving beer and wine in the afternoons, for those looking for something more potent than caffeine.

“I think it is really nice to be able to sit down and have a nice quality beer or glass of wine in the afternoon in a relaxed, comfortable environment that is not a bar or fancy restaurant,” said Merrell. “That is kind of hard to find in the KC area and I am excited to bring that to Liberty.”

The shop’s partners deliberated long and hard over a name that would put hair on your chest like their coffee. Hammerhand was chosen because it is minor character in “Lord of Rings,” as well as a reference to the American folk tale John Henry, who died with a hammer in his hand.

“I wanted the name to sound unique and memorable, but have anonymity,” said Merrell.

Kansas City native and the sole operating partner of Hammerhand Coffee, Alex Merrell barista-ed his way into the coffee world while living in Philadelphia.

“I worked at an excellent coffee company called Ultimo Coffee,” said Merrell. “It is one of the most quality-focused coffee companies in the country and I was really fortunate to get my start there. They have been nationally recognized and the owner in a World Barista Championship judge.”

A wife and a baby later, Alex moved back to Kansas City and worked at Quay in the River Market. He endeavored to open a coffee shop and happened upon the Liberty square. He hopes Hammerhand’s coffee to foam ratio will bring a positive rush to the community.

Hammerhand promises fresh coffee, a comfortable atmosphere, unique products and baked goods that rendezvoused with the oven that morning. Visit the Merrell and the shop and try a sip.

May your cup of joe be spirited, your foam be foamy and your finish be suave. Cheers.
