The Jan. 28, 2024 fight for the NFC Championship title came down to the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions, as they battled it out at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the home field of the 49ers. Things were not looking good for quarterback Brock Purdy and the 49ers, as they found themselves at a 17-point deficit by halftime, but they persevered and performed a miraculous comeback, outscoring the Lions 27-7 in the second half. The 49ers clinched the NFC Championship with a final score of 34-31, advancing to the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for the AFC Championship game. Many people doubted the Chiefs’ ability to stop the Ravens’ explosive offense, but the Chiefs’ defense, coached by Steve Spagnuolo, was able to put pressure on quarterback Lamar Jackson and hold the Ravens to 10 points, tied for their season low. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes along with tight end Travis Kelce made an unstoppable duo, with Kelce scoring the first touchdown of the game to give the Chiefs an early lead. The game ended with a final score of 17-10 with the Chiefs claiming the AFC Championship title and moving on to compete in the Super Bowl yet again.

As Super Bowl LVIII approaches, we can look back and see what happened the last time the Chiefs and the 49ers competed against each other in Super Bowl LIV. Patrick Mahomes became the Chief’s starting quarterback in 2018 and has since led his team to the Super Bowl in four of the previous five seasons, winning two of them. Super Bowl LIV was Mahomes’ first appearance in the Super Bowl, and though the Chiefs were down early, Mahomes’ offense scored 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to win 31-20. 

This will be a challenging matchup between two teams led by talented young quarterbacks and two of the league’s top ten defenses, with both teams proven to be able to handle comeback situations. Chiefs fans hope to see their team win their second consecutive Super Bowl, while the 49ers aim to win their first Super Bowl since the 1994 season. Super Bowl LVIII will be played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. (CT) with Reba singing the National Anthem and Usher performing for the halftime show.

By some miracle, this coming Sunday will be the third time Patrick Mahomes has played with the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. It is hard to believe that there has only been one Spring in my time at Jewell that we did not witness our team go all the way. However, Jalen Hurts and Travis Kelce’s bulkier brother, Jason, should prove to be a worthy opponent in the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chiefs have a powerful offense that is spearheaded by Mahomes. Mahomes is one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the league and is able to make plays with both his arm and feet. Despite a recent ankle injury, Mahomes was seen walking without assistance in press conference interviews, so he should be good to go for the game.

Mahomes is backed by a team of skilled players including JuJu Smith-Schuster and Travis Kelce. Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon strengthen the team as a strong running back duo. The Chiefs’ defense has been strong this season. They were able to shut down opposing teams with their stout front four including Chris Jones and Frank Clark.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have their own dynamic quarterback in Hurts. Hurts has quickly become one of the league’s most exciting players and is able to make big plays with his feet. The Eagle’s offensive line has been solid this season, led by Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce, who will have a tough time going against Chris Jones and the Chiefs’ Defensive front.

Hurts will also have a talented group of receivers to throw to, including A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Compared to the Chiefs, the Eagles’ defense has been inconsistent this season. This inconsistency is due mainly to the injuries of Fletcher Cox, Jalen Mills, and Rodney McLeod. 

The game is sure to be a close one, and it could come down to which team can capitalize on the other’s weaknesses. Mahomes and Hurts are both able to make big plays. The outcome of the game could depend on which quarterback can make the fewest mistakes. The Chiefs’ defense can be deadly with their potential to create a wide margin. However, their lethality depends on their ability to shut down the Eagles’ offense early. The Eagles, on the other hand, can be just as dangerous if Hurts makes the most of his running skills. 

Regardless of who wins, the 2023 Super Bowl is sure to be an exciting game and one that will be talked about for years to come, with major implications on the legacy of Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs’ players on the line. After signing the now-infamous $500 million contract ensuring that Patrick Mahomes would keep throwing touchdowns for the Kansas City Chiefs, they have found themselves in unprecedented times under his leadership. The Chiefs are currently in third place in the AFC West with a 4-4 record, a division they have won for the past five seasons.

ESPN’s Ryan Clark made his opinion clear, stating that “The Chiefs are not a good football team right now.” Going into the season, expectations were high as they have been since Mahomes took the Chiefs to the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49er’s and won. 

Fans still consider a trip to the Super Bowl a successful season despite losing the game itself last season against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. However, the Chiefs find themselves in uncharted territory, as Mahomes and the rest of the team have not been themselves. Mahomes has already surpassed his interception total from last season after completing eight games with a total of 10 interceptions. Noticeably, there has been no loss of offensive talent during the prior offseason meaning that theoretically, there should not be a decline in results. 

This has not been the case. The Chiefs’ offense has been dropping balls and failing their assignments. Fans and analysts alike have called for the Chiefs to go back to the fundamentals in order to slow the game back down to improve their focus. Mahomes is still above the pack in total passing yards, but the turnover numbers and drop back/sack ratio are the highest they’ve ever been. 

The defense has given up 6.6 yards per play, leaving them last place in the entire NFL. Objectively, this is the worst defense Mahomes has had since he took over in 2018. However, it’s likely that the defense will make adjustments and begin to look like a competitive unit by the end of the season. 

Mahomes has had a lot going on. Not only did he amass a large amount of wealth recently, but has also become a father, husband, business owner and the face of countless merchandise and brand deals. It would be a lot for anyone to handle, and I think fans trust that Mahomes will take the necessary deep breaths to get back to normal. It is imperative that he does so soon before the Chiefs lose their chance at the playoffs. The Chiefs are set to continue their season against the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 7 at 3:25 p.m.

The Kansas City Chiefs became the Kansas City Heartbreakers this past Sunday when Patrick Mahomes and company fell to the undeniable might of the legend that is Tom Brady with a final score of 9-31, just as he did in the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship a few years ago.

The betting favorite going into the game was the Chiefs and for good reason. They were the defending champion, number one seed in the AFC and had the best player in the NFL, who was seemingly good-to-go despite some toe and concussion issues the week prior. However, there was one glaring flaw that would end up being their downfall in the 55th Super Bowl. 

The Chiefs lost three veteran starting offensive linemen by the end of the AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills. Mahomes tried to play superman, despite the weakened defenses. He did, but it was not enough against Tampa Bay’s front seven defensive line and linebackers. Mahomes was actually pressured more times than he had been in all of his career, having barely any time to get the ball off, let alone to a receiver that didn’t have butter fingers. 

The most challenging part of accepting this loss here in Kansas City is the question of whether or not Patrick Mahomes can ever truly pass Tom Brady in the Greatest Of All Time legacy. Mahomes is on pace to be the face of the NFL for the foreseeable future, at least in the quarterback position. But can he ever claim the throne if he didn’t beat Brady on the biggest stage? It’s hard to say if either are in their prime right now, with Mahomes on the come up and Brady a few years or less from retirement, but that’s more of an excuse for Brady than it is Mahomes. 

Then again, you would have to look at the game itself as well. If Mahomes had his full offensive line to protect him as well as a few more penalties that should have gone their way, I think it’s a very different ball game. It’s not like Brady was the reason why the Bucs won, it was their defense more than anything. 

With Brady throwing just a little over 200 yards, I sincerely hope that Mahomes gets another shot at Brady on the biggest stage possible before he retires. Until then, the GOAT remains at the top of his throne. Opening day of the 2021 NFL season starts on Sept. 9.
