October is a busy month for Jewell’s fall sports. This year, the teams are looking at some crucial wins with a lot of talented players.

Football

Despite sophomore Tabren Yates leading a typically successful Cardinal Offense, the football team is sitting at a 1-5 record so far this year. There is no doubt that the “Agents of Change” have been showing signs of improvement every week — displayed by their win against Kentucky Wesleyan College a couple of weeks ago. With five more games to play, the team will hopefully utilize its talents well.

Volleyball

The volleyball team definitely has the talent to win a lot of games, whether it’s senior Haidan Baade recording her 1000th career dig at the team’s first Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) win this season or sophomore Bella LaPorta leading the charge with 284 kills. The team hopes to gain some traction within their GLVC standing in their upcoming Oct. 14 tournament against Lake Erie College.

Men’s Soccer

Currently the men’s soccer team is sitting at a solid 2-4-3 record with a three-way tie for most goals on the team between junior Cole Bulgren, junior Ethan Nichols and senior Carson Lee. They are looking at three remaining conference heavyweights at the GLVC with Quincy University, University of Illinois Springfield and Truman State University, respectively, for the rest of their season.

Women’s Soccer

Despite senior Corrine Hughes having an impressive eight goals so far this season, the women’s soccer team is sitting at a record of 1-11-1. The talent on the roster shows that it is entirely possible they turn their luck around as they face three conference rivals in the weeks ahead to round out the 2022 season.

Men’s Golf

It has been a rollercoaster of a season for the men’s golf team — having reached the heights of second place in the Kansas City Cup and third place at the Rockhurst Fall Invitational. Sophomore Aiden Sanders leads the team with the lowest score average of 75. The team has one final tournament in the form of the Oct. 24 and 25 Tulsa Cup in Oklahoma.

Women’s Golf

The women’s golf team received high placements at both the Kansas City Cup, third place, and Rockhurst Fall Invitational, second place. Senior Frida Hammarlund leads the pack with the lowest average score of 75.8 and was recognized as GLVC Player of the Week in late September. The team will play two more conferences this season: the Midwest Classic on Oct. 17 and 18 in Maryville and the Tulsa Cup on Oct. 24 and 25.

Men’s Cross Country

Performance for the men’s cross country team is high as they head into their final two competitions at the Baker Invitational and GLVC Championship. At the Oct. 8 Haskell Invite, the team placed fourth overall in the men’s 8k and five runners beat their career best time: senior Christian Santiago, sophomore Matthew Ingle, junior Harley Branch, sophomore Fabian Reyes and sophomore Samson Selleck. Santiago and Ingle both finished in the top 10 with eighth place and 10th place respectively.

Women’s Cross Country

The women’s cross country team is staying strong with two competitions left for the season at the Baker Invitational and GLVC Championship. The team placed sixth in the women’s 5k at the Haskell Invite with five runners beating their career best time: sophomore Lottie Vickers, sophomore Brooke Ware, first-year Lauren Flickinger, sophomore Carly Thacker and first-year Lillian Bogard. The team will face 15 college and universities at the GLVC Championship on Nov. 5, but overall their consistent performance should lead them to a good finish for the 2022 season.

Men’s Swimming

Having only started their season this past weekend, the men’s swimming team is off to a hot 2-1 start, having beaten both Maryville University, 226-31, and Truman State University, 121-83. The team scored four first place wins at the Truman State University competition: graduate student Austin Wolfe in both the 800 and 400 free, junior Conner Sawyer in the 100 free and junior Jose Carlos Sanchez in the 200 IM. The Cardinals will have to keep up their momentum through February to achieve their goals for a successful season.

Women’s Swimming

The women’s swimming team is showing signs of a winning season sitting at 1-1 after beating Maryville University, 187.5-59.5, in their opener. At the Truman State University competition, first-year Maddie Atwood placed first in the 50 free and sophomore Martina Torrent achieved first in both the 200 IM and 200 breast. It is no doubt this younger squad will have success throughout their season.

The William Jewell College men and women’s swim teams recently travelled to Crawfordsville, Ind. to compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships. The women’s team finished fourth and the men’s team sixth overall. In addition to setting personal best times, the team broke 21 school records. Madeline Allen, first-year nursing major, and Paige Meredith, junior business administration and ACT-in major, qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships. Allen is the first first-year to qualify for the National Championship in the history of Jewell’s program and will be competing in the women’s 1000 freestyle. Meredith qualified for the second year in a row and will compete in three events: the 200 individual medley, the 100 butterfly and the 200 butterfly.

“My favorite part of conference was getting to be a part of the women’s 800 free relay because we not only shattered our school record, but we also finished third. This was the highest our women’s relay has ever scored before. We were all really excited,” said Alex Millhuff, sophomore chemistry major.

Millhuff, along with Allen, Meredith and Shea Marcinski, sophomore Sapnish, education, and ACT-in major, finished third with an NCAA B qualifying time.

João Pedro Granato, sophomore international relations major, set multiple personal bests as well as placing second in the 1650 free and third in the 1000 free.

“All teams were very prepared and the meet had very fast times for every event. Our team was also very strong and we put up a good fight against nationally ranked teams. My favorite part about conference was seeing everyone cheering you on behind your lanes and on the sides of the pool. The atmosphere was really great and the team was very united,” said Granato.

Coach Mark Gole was pleased with the team’s performance both in the pool and in the classroom, as they had the highest team GPA to date last semester.

“I am extremely proud of the men’s and women’s teams for the commitment that they make to their academics, swimming and each other. We ask a great deal out of them in every aspect here at Jewell. I am proud of their accomplishments, but I am more proud of the people they become as a result of their hard work and dedication,” said Gole.

For the seniors on the team, this was the last meet of their college career.

Max Bennett, senior business administration major, set both personal bests and school records at conference.

“Overall, as a team, I feel that we have improved significantly, and it showed at conference. We are slowly building a stronger, better, and faster team as the years go by. I am satisfied with ending my college swimming career at this stage of my life. I have ended this chapter and I am excited about starting the newest chapter in my life,” said Bennett.

Haley Ramsey, senior psychology and ACT-In major, also swam well at conference. Gole mentioned Ramsey’s third place finish in the 200 fly and school record she set. After spending many hours practicing and competing over the last four years, the move to not swimming anymore can be difficult.

“It feels very strange to be finished with swimming. I’m low-key having an identity crisis,” said Ramsey.

Overall, many were proud of the team’s performance.

“Overall, conference was great because we finally were able to see all the work we put into the season pay off. I’m proud of my teammates for everything they have accomplished this season. We deserved to swim fast,” said Millhuff.

The William Jewell Cardinals men’s and women’s swim teams just returned from a very successful Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) meet. The women’s team placed fourth and the men’s team fifth in the conference. Both teams have noticeably improved from last season.

“The men’s team was fifth place by 79 points last year, and this year we were fifth place by five points,” Coach Mark Gole said. “We’ve closed the gap a little bit on Lewis [University].”

The women’s team was within five points of third place.

“Overall, out of 38 school records, [the men and women’s teams] broke 34 of them. So from top to bottom, our team did very well,” Gole said.

Nationals are looming, with the invite list set to release next week. Paige Meredith, sophomore, is currently ranked 13th in the country for the 100-meter butterfly, and Nationals will invite back 19 women for that event. Meredith currently stands the best chance of receiving an invitation.

The women’s team enjoyed many successes on the first day of Conference, with Maggie Metz, senior, winning second, Alex Millhuff, first-year, sixth and Heather Cistola, sophomore, seventh in the 1000-meter freestyle.

“In the very first individual event in the entire competition we had every swimmer who swam score for us. I believe that event gave our team momentum and confidence, and we ran with it,” Gole said.

The men’s team also enjoyed many successes at the GLVC meet. Matt Luton, senior, Lane Bland, sophomore and Henning Kunkel, first-year, all scored in the 1000-meter freestyle.

“One of the biggest highlights of the meet was freshman João Pedro Granato winning the 1650 meter freestyle. That was the first ever win in the Great Lakes Valley Conference for program. It was very exciting to see him do that,” Gole said.

Granato went on to win GLVC’s “Freshman of the Year,” an award decided on by all of the head coaches at the conference.

“I think the most exciting moment at conference is when I discovered I got selected as Freshman of the Year. I was in the bathroom, and when I got back, I wasn’t sure what was going on. But when they told me [I won], I was super happy and satisfied about it,” Granato said. “I’m happy that the team got where it is right now. We accomplished a lot of things this year, and next year hopefully we’ll accomplish more.”

The William Jewell College men’s and women’s swimming teams hosted an intra-squad scrimmage over the weekend in preparation for their upcoming season. Jewell swimming will field a team with four full scholarship classes since swimming was reinstated as a program in 2011. The scrimmage capped off the annual red versus black week. The team captains, Maggie Metz, senior; Rachel Kaegi, junior; Nathan Graber, senior; and Shane Ahrens, junior, drafted teams at the beginning of the week. The teams competed in other events earlier in the week, including ultimate frisbee and a pull-up contest, that was culminated by the scrimmage.

On the women’s side, the black squad, captained by Metz, upended the red squad, captained by Kaegi, by a score of 108 to 85. Metz lead the black team, taking first in the 800m freestyle with a time for 9:37.47, the 400m freestyle with a time of 4:42.83, and the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:12.60. Jordan Hamilton, first-year, took first in the 50m freestyle for the red team with a time of 29.81. In the 200m individual medley and the 100m freestyle, Paige Meredith, sophomore, led all swimmers with a time of 2:28.85 and 1:02.44, respectively. Kaegi took first in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:28.25. In the 200m backstroke, Ida Nyman, junior, won with a time of 2:26.65 for the red team. Taylor Hunt, sophomore, took first in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:52.53 for the black team. In the 400m medley relay, the black team, consisting of Shea Marcinski, Brytany Stewart, first-years, Hunt, and Meredith took first with a time of 4:40.87. Alex Millhuff, first-year; Heather Cistola, sophomore; Haley Ramsey; sophomore; and Hamilton took first in the 400m freestyle relay with a time of 4:16.80 for the red team.

The men’s team saw the red squad, captained by Graber, overtook the Ahrens-captained black squad by score of 118-86. The men’s competition was highlighted by Joao Pedro Granato, first-year. He broke the Mabee Center pool record in the 800m freestyle with a time of 8:27.64. He also won the 400m freestyle with a time of 4:06.30 for the red team. Matt Luton, senior, of the red team took first in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:58.72. For the black team, Max Bennet, junior, took first in the 50m freestyle with a time of 24.80, and Daniel Day, junior, took first in the 200m individual meter with a time of 2:16.46. Graber took first in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:15.16. Samuel Schaefer, first-year, won the 100m freestyle with a time of 54.03. Uriah Rieners, junior, took first in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:24.69, and Parker Temple, junior, took first in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:15.26, all for the red team. In the 400m medley relay, the black team, consisting of Day, Aubrey Churchman, junior; Trey Roggenstein, first-year; and Craig Haug, first-year, took first with a time of 4:03.06. Granato, Luton, Schaefer, and Keaton Dir, first-year, took first in the 400m freestyle relay with a time of 3:38.80 for the red team.

The swimming team looks to build on a successful 2013-2014 competition year. With a full team, they will no longer sacrifice points if a given race is unfilled. The team competed in the Show-Me-Showdown at the University of Missouri at the beginning of October. The men’s and women’s team both placed eighth. The teams will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. Oct. 31 to take on the Indianapolis University Greyhounds. The Cardinals’ first home meet is scheduled for Nov. 15 when they take on Lindenwood University and the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
