While he was away, Adams completed 14 credit hours, which consisted of independent study and internship hours.

The Hornets, located in Charlotte, N.C., are an American professional basketball team in the Southeast division. The team was founded in 1988 and was originally owned by George Shinn. Their current owner is Michael Jordan, and the current head coach is Steve Clifford. The franchise originally began as an expansion team.

Adams discovered the internship by connecting with individuals on LinkedIn that worked for the Hornets’ sales department. They posted job opportunities on teamworkonline.com, and Adams applied for the group sales internship.

“I wanted to be a part of the Hornets because of their rebrand. So, a couple years ago they were the Bobcats, and they were one of the worst teams in the league, and they bought back the Hornets name, and they rebranded and I wanted to be a part of that,” said Adams.

Adams worked as a group sales intern. He helped the Hornet’s sales department find schools, companies and other groups that were looking to hold events. Adams would collect contact information and work with these groups to organize various outings, such as holiday parties or discounted games.

“I got to work 15 of the games, and just seeing people and the reps I’ve worked with for months get to actually come out to the game and enjoy themselves, it’s just a fun experience,” said Adams.

Adams found true value in seeing his work affect people in a positive way.

“Just seeing that process come to light, and see it take shape and really develop is just really the most fun thing,” said Adams.

The most valuable part of the internship for Adams, other than being able to attend 15 professional basketball games, was the networking opportunity. This internship was a way for Adams to get his foot in the door of the sports industry, and make the connections he would need to build a career out of it.

Adams also found that the hands-on learning involved in the internship was helpful and guided him to what he truly loved about the business. He thought that it was even more beneficial, because he got to experience it before graduating.

“You don’t sit in a classroom… you actually go out and experience it,” said Adams.

Adams used a scholarship he received in high school to pay for this internship. He currently has the opportunity to do an insurance internship, but he’s leaning towards trying to get another job working for a sports team, for which he hopes to use his Journey Grant.

The scholarship paid for the cost of an extended stay hotel suite, which is where Adams lived during his internship.

“I’ve already worked in professional baseball; I’ve already worked in professional basketball; I’ll try to do football,” said Adams.

Adams enjoyed living on his own but missed Jewell during his time away.

“I missed a lot of events, like Homecoming, that I hold dear to my heart, but I was welcomed back to Jewell with open arms,” said Adams.

Throughout the past few weeks, several changes have taken place within our athletic department: first, the installation of a brand new athletics website, and secondly, a new, conference-wide sports broadcasting service.

In early November, William Jewell College signed a new contract deal with SIDEARM Sports, which is the leader in collegiate web solutions with over 700 colleges on their licenses.

Paul Worstell, Sports Information Director, helped Jewell renew their contract with SIDEARM Sports. His favorite part about the new design is the Game Story template, which is a recap of the sporting event, including stats and pictures. Additionally, the site includes several social media outlets for the William Jewell Department of Athletics.

Worstell anticipates that the website will keep the current design for several years.

“I am always looking at other school’s websites and trying to stay up to date with the current trends of DII athletic websites,” Worstell said.

Besides the new website design, Jewell was a large part of a new conference -wide sports broadcasting network. The Great Lakes Valley Conference Sports Network (GLVCSN) is the first NCAA Division II (DII) conference to launch a sports broadcasting platform for all of the schools in their conference.

Rick Cole, who has been the Director of Sports Broadcasting for four years at Jewell, helped the conference in this endeavor.

“It was a nice honor that the GLVC asked us to help,” Cole said. “After years of hard work from work-study students, I was proud to assist the GLVC in the broadcasting area.”

The new service allows fans to live-stream games from GLVC competitions, including sports like cross-country and golf, which traditionally did not have live coverage in DII sports.

“Watching delayed broadcasts takes the fun out of sports. Live broadcasts give fans the in-house atmosphere that delayed broadcasts do not offer,” Cole said.

The new service allows family, friends and recruits to watch games, which is an excellent recruiting tool for Jewell. The GLVCSN also allows corporate sponsors to sign with the College, which helps promotes Jewell’s image within the Kansas City metro area and the rest of the Midwest.

The William Jewell Cardinal men and women’s swim teams returned to the Mabee Center Sat. Nov. 15. The team took on the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) Tritons and Lindenwood University Lions. The lions were ranked fourth in the nation in Division-II men’s swimming and ranked 12th in Division-II women’s swimming. The Cardinals beat the Tritons, but lost to the Lions.

On the women’s side, the Cardinals beat UMSL by a score of 212.00 to 26.00 but lost to Lindenwood 145.00-116.0.

“It definitely got our name out there,” Heather Cistola, sophomore, said. “We performed well and we are stronger off this year than we were at this time last year. To compete against nationally-ranked Lindenwood this strong, at this point in the year, is exciting.”

Cistola placed third in both the 800-meter freestyle and the 200-meter freestyle. She also placed fourth in the 400-meter freestyle. Her 400-meter freestyle team finished third.

“I was amped by my performance, but the team and I have lots to improve on,” Cistola said.

The men’s team defeated UMSL 197.00- 44.00, but fell short to Lindenwood 169.00- 93.00.

Ben Plank, senior, participated in his final home meet as a Cardinal swimmer.

“It was very exciting,” Plank said. “We performed well as a team and did what we had to do. After ten years of swimming it is exciting to see a team develop in-depth like this.”

Plank was one of the first swimmers at Jewell and said it is beneficial to have a bigger team [than his first year] that can compete at the level that they do. He hopes to make improvements both individually and as a team during his final stretch on the Hill.

“[This last home meet] is on the long list of ‘last experiences’ that I will have during this year. I am going to make the most out of my remaining time on the Hill and in the pool,” Plank said.

Throughout the course of the day, the Cardinals broke ten pool records. They won a combined eight races against the Lindenwood Lions.

Joao Pedro Granato, first-year, won the 800 meter freestyle, 200 meter freestyle and the 400 meter freestyle. He broke his own record for the 800 meter freestyle by nearly eight seconds; his time was 8:19.90.

Taylor Hunt, sophomore, won the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke. Ida Nyman, junior, won the 100 and 200 meter backstroke. Alex Millhuff, first-year, won her 100 meter freestyle narrowly by .22 seconds.

Both Granato and Nyman were selected as the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) athletes of the week for their performances Saturday. This is the first time that Jewell swimming has received recognition since last fall, when Matt Luton, senior, was selected by the conference.

“Granato is a stud, and he is such a joy to have on the team. He brings energy and life,” Plank said about Granato’s GLVC-award winning performance.

“Ida [Nyman] has put in a lot of hard work over her three years here at Jewell. She deserves this award for all of the work that she puts in. I am happy for her and I hope she can continue to find success throughout this season,” Cistola said.

Jewell swimming resumes Dec. 17 and 18, when they take Lewis University.

The Cardinals returned to Greene Stadium this past weekend to take on Saint Joseph’s College Pumas in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play. The Pumas jumped out to an early lead and kept the points rolling, beating the Cardinals 49-7. This loss puts the team’s record at 4-6 (4-3).

The Pumas came out of the gate ready to play. On their first drive, they drove 78 yards in seven plays, capped off by a 41 yard run by Quarterback Wade Burtron.

After a three-and-out by the Cards, the Pumas threatened to score again. But on a third down play, Nick Messer, junior, intercepted a pass thrown by Burtron. The Cards could not capitalize on this turnover, however, with their drive ending after a missed field goal by junior Brandon Womack.

Over their next three possessions, the Pumas scored three touchdowns, all unanswered by the Cards. The first one came via a 10 yard run from Mike Anderson, running back. The next one came from an 8 yard run by Braxto Shelton, and the third came from a pass from Burtron to Addi Dellinger. These three drives put the Puma’s up 28-0 on the Cardinals.

The Cards then put some points on the board with a 45 yard pass from Nick West, junior, to Anthony Mullins, sophomore, with 7:49 remaining in the second quarter. This was West’s 16th touchdown pass of the year and Mullins’ seventh receiving touchdown.

At the end of the first half, the Pumas put up seven more points when Burtron threw a 5 yard pass to Dellinger for a touchdown. In the second half, the Pumas scored two more touchdowns. The first came from a 15 yard pass to Alphonso Hines from Burtron with 7:26 remaining in the third quarter. The next touchdown came from an interception return by Colon Wright, who intercepted senior D.J. Balazs pass with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Jewell ended up with 252 offensive yards, 165 passing and 87 rushing. West went seven for 19 in passing with 91 yards, a touchdown and an interception. West also rushed for fifty-nine yards, and led the team. Balazs went six for 17 with 74 yards and an interception. Trejuan Mask, first-year, put up 53 rushing yards. Mullins led the team in receiving yards with 45 yards, which resulted in a touchdown.

Defensively, Jimmy DeStafano, senior, led the team in tackles with 10. Mark Baumgartner, senior, Austin Doss, junior, and Eric Jackson, senior, each recorded a sack.

The Cardinals will wrap up their season this weekend in Indianapolis against the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds, who boast a record of 9-1 (7-0). The Greyhounds are the 2014-2015 GLVC Champions, making this their third championships in a row. Kickoff will be at 4:00 p.m. Nov. 15.
