William Jewell College is blissfully located near Kansas City, so students should take advantage of all the growing the city has to offer. But sometimes it’s hard to know what to do once you finally decide to make the drive downtown. Here’s a short guide to some of the cool Kansas City activities and events this weekend.

This weekend only:

Browne’s Irish Marketplace and Deli Irish breakfast→ If you’re looking to get into the St. Patrick’s Day mood, Browne’s is serving Irish breakfast Saturday until St. Patrick’s Day. Next weekend is the last breakfast, but you can also get in tomorrow to try to avoid a crowd – and to satisfy that St. Patty’s Day need as soon as possible.

KC Wine Festival→ For those students who are of age and looking to splurge a bit, Uncorked is hosting the third annual KC Wine Festival Saturday, March 9 from 1-9 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.

Ice skating at Crown Center→ If you’ve somehow missed out on ice skating during all of this cold weather, go to the Ice Terrace at Crown Center this weekend because it will close March 10. This ice rink is a Kansas City icon in the winter, and for a relatively low price, you can rent skates and skate around for as long as you’d like. I recommend skating for a bit before wandering around the shops in Crown Center – it’s one of the best places to windowshop in the city.

For a short time only:

Dinosaurs at Union Station→ The Dinosaurs Revealed exhibit at Union Station is only open until March 24. The exhibit explores the expansive history of dinosaurs. Tickets can be purchased here. Go look at the dinosaurs.

I recommend walking around after going to the exhibition. Hop on the free Kansas City Streetcar and ride down to the Crossroads, Power and Light or the River Market to get some food or coffee or just to look around the city. If you want to save money in order to splurge on the dinosaurs exhibit, find a free parking spot or park in a place where you can get your parking validated at a nearby restaurant.

Every weekend:

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art→ Unfortunately, there is not much that is completely free in Kansas City this weekend, especially with the cold. The Nelson provides escape from both the weather and a dwindling wallet. Admission to the museum is free and gives you access to all but the special exhibit – which is currently “Napoleon: Power and Splendor.” This is the last weekend to see the Napoleon exhibit before it leaves the museum.

You can go to the Nelson over and over and each time focus on a different area of the museum and not get bored. Because it’s free, you don’t have to feel pressured to stay for a long time or see everything at once. Go check it out and see what your favorite section is.

The Phoenix Jazz Brunch→  The Phoenix is a jazz club in downtown Kansas City. While the club has live music and amazing food most evenings – and nights for those students over 21 – their weekend brunches are to die for.

Every Saturday morning from 10 a.m to 2 p.m., Alex Abramovitz and the Swingin’ Kansas City Fives play live jazz to accompany a fantastic brunch. Every Sunday at the same time, you can hear live blues with your brunch. The music is amazing, the food is sublime and the overall environment is just fun.

I recommend the chicken and waffles – it comes with a barbeque maple syrup that makes you transcend –  but everything on the menu is great.
