William Jewell College is full of students with diverse passions and lifestyles, but one thing seems to run deep in every student’s blood – commitment. For junior education major Grace Haug, her commitments are to her education and loved ones. Living a day in the life of Grace Haug means balancing classes, work, friends, a sorority, extracurriculars and homework, all while also trying to get enough sleep.
Haug has been doing this balancing act for two years now. On top of learning to teach the young minds of the upcoming generation, she is in choral ensemble and is the vice president of programs in Delta Zeta. Haug gave the Hilltop Monitor an example of her typical Tuesday schedule, which she says is her busiest day.
Tuesday’s schedule
8:30 am: Wake up
9:30-10:00: Voice lessons
10:45-12:25: Class
12:30-12:45: Lunch
1:00-2:50: Class
3:00-4:00: Homework
4:00-5:15: Choral Ensemble
5:30-6:00: Dinner and meal prepping
While Grace is only enrolled in 13 credit hours, she still has a full plate of responsibilities. As well as fieldwork on Thursdays from 8-10:30 a.m. and babysitting on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. She also holds a leadership position with Delta Zeta, which means she has Executive meetings on Monday from 6-7 p.m. and then Chapter meetings from 7-8 p.m.
As a junior, Grace thought she’d have balancing life and classes down, but it’s never as easy as it appears on paper. She suggests writing things down, because marking stuff off a list is super satisfying. She writes down everything she needs to do in her agenda, but the biggest advice she can offer to stressed and busy students is “It’ll get done.” Grace tells herself this to keep her mind on track. Even if she has piles of homework or a booked day, she knows she’ll get done what’s necessary before it’s due.
