As students and faculty get settled into the new school year, William Jewell College Art Club is getting into the swing of things. Heather Jackson, sophomore Oxbridge Literature and Theory major, created the club to grow interest in the art community in and around Jewell. It is sponsored by Dr. Robert Quinn, chair of the Art Department. The club is open to everyone, not just art majors or minors. It allows people to receive feedback on their artwork and have fun enjoying and creating art. They want to not only promote art on campus, but want to eventually expand to the Liberty area.
It is not fully established as a club yet, but when it is it hopes to meet every other Thursday.
“For each meeting we hope to focus on a particular art medium such as charcoal, pastels or acrylics. The officers will then come up with the project for these weeks involving a different exercise involving these art mediums,” said Jackson.
She explained that this way no prior art experience is required and artists can go at the pace with which they are comfortable. At subsequent meetings, artists can receive constructive criticism to cultivate growth.
The club already has many people signed up and hopes to begin meeting sometime in late September. To expand beyond the campus, members hope to get involved with various community service opportunities in the Liberty area. They are also interested in the idea of using First Fridays in downtown Kansas City to branch out and see the work of various artists in the larger area. They do plan to have a biannual art exhibit here on campus where artists can showcase their art.
To become a voting member in the club, officers suggest that you come to at least four meetings per semester and present a piece at the exhibit. If you are interested in art club, keep an eye out for the first meeting coming in a few weeks.
